San Clemente Island report 8/17
« on: August 19, 2020, 04:05:37 PM »
We went over to San Clemente Island Sunday evening on the Reel Obsession hoping for some yellowtail and bluefin.  We arrived at Pyramid Head around 4:00 pm and didn't see any bluefin around so we anchored up in the cove and was rewarded with one yellow, plus the usual 3 B's.  That night we made about 40 pieces of squid before the sea lions shut it down. At first grey light I was using one of those live squid on a dropper loop on 40 lb test, fishing about 10 feet off the bottom and was rocked by a yellow that made a beeline for the kelp.  There was nothing I could do to stop it from reaching it's goal, must have been one of the larger units.  We then made our way closer to Pyramid Head, where I managed another yellow on a flylined squid.  The sea lions shut that bite down too.

Went over to Desperation Reef and did manage to get the bluefin boiling in our chum line.  Even dropping down to 15 lb fluro and a hot sardine didn't work, these guys were much harder to get to bite compared to last week's fish on the backside of Catalina.   Live squid didn't work either. All in all a great trip with lots of action and variety, now the question is where the heck are the biting bluefin?  Need to do some more looking around.

Great report, Don.

It's always fun to fish San Clemente Island and use the cove as a home base. Love those Yellowtail.

Best,
